SHUMBA CAMP
Meaning ‘lion’, Shumba is aptly named after the prides of lion seen in the area. The Plains are home to hundreds of red lechwe, puku, roan and oribi. Sail over the Plains in a hot air balloon.
Located on a tree island in the centre of the breathtaking Busanga Plains is stylish Shumba Camp. Its six luxury tented units are spacious, en-suite with both indoor and outdoor showers, and all raised on wooden platforms with spectacular views of the surrounding plains.
Shumba Camp is built entirely on stilts to protect it from the floodwater and thus the structures stand high enough off the ground affording far reaching views of the Busanga Plains. The Camp has six spacious luxury safari tents on raised platforms with spectacular views of the surrounding plains. Due to the elevation the lodge is blissfully breezy. Shumba Camp is probably the most luxurious of all Kafue’s camps with extensive use of glass offering expansive views. Rooms are generous and exquisite with luxurious modern fittings and an especially inviting outside lounge area overlooking the plains.
A big focus at the camp is to involve you in the safari way of life and many of the meals are prepared and cooked in front of you.
Activities at Shumba are led by enthusiastic guides with in-depth knowledge of the Kafue area and its wildlife. You have the option of game drives and walking safaris in and around the Busanga Plains and night drives provide the added excitement of the nocturnal wonders. The Busanga Plains offers large herds of plains game and their predators, including leopard, wild dog, cheetah and prides of lion up to 20 strong. This camp is perfectly situated to take advantage of the plains game and predator concentrations of the Busanga Plains, being situated as it is in close proximity to permanent water and having easy access to a mix of seasonal and permanent floodplains. Shumba is named after a favourite species in the area – prides of lion sometimes up to 20 strong! Viewing of species like puku, lechwe and hippo is possible for much of the day from the comfort of your tent or the main deck, while the camp’s fig trees ensure both shade and constant bird activity in the canopy above
