Those in the know within the Southern African tourist industry are predicting bumper tourist influxes to this amazing part of the world in the new decade. As we stand on the threshold of 2020, we decided to look at some of the very best destinations that Southern Africa has to offer.
In this article and our previous one, we have chosen our top Six Southern African vacation destinations for 2020 and as experienced specialists in this field we should know! We name 6 countries that all hold a myriad of great attractions within them, but highlight just two – of probably the most visited ones. As there are just so many choices when one visits Southern Africa for a safari or guided tour, we hope this brief overview will help…
Tanzania
Tanzania is one of the most uniquely beautiful destinations in this part of the globe and boasts 2 of the world’s most renowned tourist attractions within its vast and contrasting landscape. More than 25% of the total land is covered in some of the most iconic wildlife preservation areas (16 in total) making it an absolute must visit for wildlife safari enthusiasts.
Unquestionably one of the world’s most renowned wildlife sanctuaries, the Serengeti National park, boasts the ‘Big 7!’ This includes the usual ‘Big 5’ of Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo and the cat predators, Lion and Leopard – but adds the Cheetah and African Wild dog – also much sought after sightings!
Well known to Mountaineers, many of whom have summited its magnificent peaks, is the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro. It contrasts its surrounds and rises abruptly from the open plains to 19,344 feet above sea level – the highest mountain in Africa and the highest walkable summit in the world!
Kenya
From its white Sandy beaches on the East African coast, to more than 45 National parks and reserves and magnificent lakes, Kenya has something to offer every type of traveller. Home to the renowned Masai warriors, Kenya could be Southern Africa’s fastest emerging vacation destination.
The famed Masai Mara National reserve is regarded as the ‘Jewel’ of Kenya’s wildlife safari and preservation areas. The annual Wildebeest’s migration is magnificent and involves over 1.5 million of these animals arriving in winter and covering its plains until November. The wildlife is more abundant than in any other African area and the birdlife abounds too, with over 400 species recorded on the reserve.
The massively popular destination of Lake Victoria is yet another Kenyan treasure. Rich in fish life and a fisherman’s paradise, it is also considered to be the heart of Africa as it is the source of its main artery – the mighty Nile River!
Zambia
Also rich in wildlife for the Southern African safari enthusiast, Zambia offers great waterways for adrenaline junkies and seventeen magnificent waterfalls, including ‘world wonder’ Victoria Falls. These run into the beautiful Zambezi River and its people, living in peace and harmony can’t wait to welcome you!
The breathtakingly spectacular Victoria Falls is a world wonder and disperses enough water when in fill flood to create what is known as a ‘rain forest’ on its banks. Affectionately named ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ meaning ‘The Smoke that Thunders,’ more than five hundred million cubic meters of water per minute plummet over the edge, over a width of nearly two kilometers, into a gorge of over one hundred meters below!
The largest man-made lake is the world is the incredible Lake Kariba, a fisherman and water sports enthusiasts paradise. Providing hydro-electricity to Zimbabwe and Zambia, the lake is 280km long and 40km at its widest point. The banks are also teaming with wildlife for those who prefer to just cruise and view.
