A once in a lifetime Rhino Conservation Experience made available through Lapalala Wilderness Reserve, Phoenix Brewery & Tintswalo Lapalala Safari Lodge.

To adventure is to live, to break free from the shackles of habit and customs, to shake off the ordinary and the mundane, is to make life a never ending journey of discovery and reward” – Clive Walker

In support of World Rhino Month, Lapalala Wilderness and Tintswalo Lapalala have joined forces with industry greats such as Mr Clive Walker, the co-founder of Lapalala Wilderness and the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), to bring together fellow conservation enthusiasts for an immersive wilderness experience with the rare opportunity of getting up close to these magnificent mega-herbivours.

Lapalala Wilderness is committed to ensuring the survival of Africa’s rhinos and implements best practice research and management.  The purpose of the Rhino Conservation Experience is to obtain individual rhino DNA samples and to place ear notches and microchips for identification and research purposes.

Tintswalo Lapalala is inviting guests or exclusive parties to participate in this extraordinary experience.  You will play an active role in the day’s adventure.  As the veterinary team flies overhead in a helicopter in search of the rhino, guests will follow in hot pursuit with an expert ranger in an open 4 x 4 safari vehicle.  Once the animal is darted, the helicopter will land and guests will be able to assist with the veterinary team in collecting samples of blood, tissue and horn shavings.  By participating in this important conservation effort, you are directly involved in saving this endangered species.

South Africa is home to the majority of the world’s rhino population and the conservation work conducted in the Lapalala Reserve makes an important contribution to global research and the fight against poaching. The veterinary team will dart and immobilize white or black rhino, with participants assisting during the process of monitoring the animal/s after capture. DNA will be collected as part of the Rhino DNA Indexing System (RhODIS) – a forensic tool that stores a unique genetic fingerprint for every rhino that has been sampled using blood, tissue and horn.

The Lapalala Wilderness Reserve is located within the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, an official UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the past 40 years the reserve has become a beacon for wildlife research and conservation in South Africa. Recognized as one of the largest and most scenic private reserves in southern Africa, its abundance of flora plays home to a vast array of wildlife that is protected within its 48 500 hectares. This includes 300 bird species, 50 fish species, 147 mammal species, 114 reptile species, 33 amphibian species and various breeding projects.
